Workshop on "Mental Health"
- at Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee.

Program held on Sunday, 26 March 2017,
at Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee.

Dr Ali Khwaja of Banjara Academy conducting a Workshop on Mental Health at Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, 26 March 2017.

On the foothills of Rishikesh and Haridwar, adjoining the HQ of Bengal Engineering Group, the famous Sappers of the Indian Army, is the salubrious campus of IIT Roorkee, the first engineering college of our country. It was a matter of pride for me to be invited there to conduct a Workshop on Mental Health, not only because I am an IIT product (from Bombay) but also because my maternal grandfather graduated from there exactly a hundred years ago in the year 2017! Though the campus was overflowing with engineering students from all over, I was happy to see the response to a serious topic like Mental Health. The attention and involvement was quite sincere, but unfortunately there was not much time for a detailed question and answer session. I focused on understanding the initial symptoms of disappointment, depression, hopelessness that could eventually lead to major issues – I exhorted them to be aware of their own emotional state and also be observant when they see any friend or hostel-mate who is showing unusual behavior. I also had very meaningful discussions with some of the sincere Professors and Wardens who are genuinely concerned about the welfare of their students, and the peer or academic pressures they go through. I hope and wish that this lays the foundation for greater awareness, removal of stigma, and practically working towards enhancing mental health of these high-achievers and intellectual young men and women.
