THE JOURNEY UPTO MANTHAN
Manthan Residential Camp, 05-07 Oct 12: Strengthening Close Relationships
Manthan offers in its self styled fashion, an amazing opportunity to people to come from different cultural and social backgrounds to discard their original identity or the mask they had worn to show a different personality to the world outside. It creates an atmosphere to be the person who you always wanted to be and also adorn a new one which got after being enlightened by the virtues of the packed 48 hours, which enables them to identify the human inside them and around them.
As soon as the dates for the Manthan camp was announced, there was mad rush to register the names by not only the current students but also the graduates of Banjara, who wanted another experience of the Manthan.. It was amazing to see the excitement of a graduate who convinced her family to experience the MANTHAN.
The topic for discussion during this Manthan was ‘Close relationships’. This 12 pages booklet helped us to understand the sense of ‘relationships’ and this was beautifully narrated by Ali. The lectures, the activities, the meditation, the brain storming sessions had deep impact on us. We had many of the participants sharing their personal experiences when it came to building a new relationship and also breaking the bond of an old relationship. Many of us felt that if we could have the power to rewind some few years of life, go back to the past, repair the cracks that had formed due to many reasons and come back to the present. What a miracle it would be...Nevertheless, it was not too late. Any relationship could be worked on with open mind to make it a close relationship!! Many of us wanted one to one with a senior counsellor, so that we needed the motivation that we can do much better and carry no guilt.
The fun filled activities included a long dark night lighted with the campfire. Mr.Ajay took the charge of being the Camp Jockey took great effort to identify the talents of the participants who took turns to enchant the others. The night went on till almost it was ticking morning.
The food and its supplier need a special mention. The hot steaming coffee and tea, the amazing lip smacking food salads and desserts are all still in memory.
As the 48 hour camp was winding up each of the groups into which the participants were divided into presented a collage and a skit based on the topic of the camp “CLOSE RELATIONSHIPS”. All the participants were awarded with a certificate and a small memento.
The camp ended with a very happy note ‘Kabhi Alvida na kehana’... We part only to meet again. We met just a few hours back....now have amazing memories to carry with and a friend for life!! Life being a long journey, it is worth to stop and give a thought to our relationships. Lets be stronger and wiser....!!

Leading Banjara Academy's online email counselling team of volunteer-counsellors, I realize it is not an easy task reaching out to a person one has never met, never seen, without the added advantage of gestures, eye contact, a gentle reassuring touch, tone of voice and yet providing empathy, positive strokes, making the person feel heard and understood.
With the aid of only written words, it is quite a task building trust, making people open up and share and helping them cope and feel better. So when in many instances they write back saying thank you and that they feel so much better, the feeling one gets is priceless and incomparable - knowing one has done something right, something good!
Hats off to all the volunteeer-counsellors of Banjara Academy who have been carrying on this work silently, anonymously for the last couple of years. Truly commendable! - Sreedhar MA
