Psychological Counselling Skills Workshop, 9-13 Apr 2012
Report by Rajkumar

Day 1 - About Counselling, Brain Storming, and Exercises on Self-awareness

Day 1 began with Ali’s formal intro about the academy and its services rendered, and we had a formal intro of self as to who we are and what we are. Later Ali spoke on what counseling is and what it is not; what are the types of counseling and who all can do counseling. The main message in his talk was counseling is not giving advice, it is mere assisting the client to take decision of his own. Later we were divided in to groups of 5, and had a brain storming of what we really wanted to know. Later Asha and Kanmani spoke on self-awareness and we had many exercises on self-awareness and about understanding and identifying emotions and feelings and difference between thought and feelings and ended with how to manage emotions. Sessions were really interactive and brain storming. We met some volunteers working for Banjara.

Day 2 - Building Rapport, Empathy and Communication

Day 2 went on with all about building rapport, and we found we could not build rapport with Nalini simulating as a child, later we had a glimpse at what empathy is, and me the poor chap could not make a empathy statement to one nearby. Later Sapna spoke on communication we played age old Chinese whisper game to see ourselves how bad we are at communication.

Day 4 - Mental Health, Rajdeep, Listening, Emotions, Workplace Counselling

Day 4, Ali spoke on stigma attached to mental health. Later we saw a man of destiny, Rajdeep. What a man with a broad vision which I myself without the sight disability don’t have! I wondered how he could counsel without seeing but later discovered counseling is all about listening and emotions. Hats off to him. I the poor chap again could not give a positive stroke to one nearby. Mala briefed about workplace counseling.

Day 3 - Discover the child in us, Perception, Being non-judgemental and Paraphrasing

Day 3 was really good for Genie and Barath took us to our childhood and discovered the child in us. We could really feel the child in us. And all those games we played were really awesome. Later we were taught about perception and being non judgmental. Later Nalini spoke on paraphrasing. I felt that I was good at that one.

Day 5 - Roleplay, Valedictory Function

On Day 5, we had real role-play and I never dreamt I could make a 60 year young lady to pour out her emotions, but had always the curiosity of asking questions. Though in the beginning I had a doubt whether I am the right person to do counseling, later got relieved of my confusion and found I can also do counseling, and I will do it. Later we had the valedictory function.

REALLY HATS OFF TO ALI AND HIS TEAM TO KEEP ME IN THE COMPANY OF THOSE WHO SPOKE NO MEDICINE WHILE FOCUSING ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH. IT WAS GOOD TO BE THERE. AND THANKS SREEDHAR FOR THE NICE CO-ORDINATION.
