Before taking up the course I had some experience in counseling people as part of my project management activities.

I was comfortable with few aspects…confused about few so joined this course with the hope that I will get the right directions for becoming a professional from amateur. This course did assure me of the requirements of empathetic ear, non judgementalism, importance of listening than talking, accepting the individual as is which I was doing right. I used to be always confused about the solutioning part as I used to get very jittery on what solution to propose. Concept of Non directive is the key takeaway and I am sure this would help me to be at ease with the counselee in future. I understand that each case will be different and every session will have some learning for me too. Doing online was really convenient for me. Also the flexibility of doing the course at my own pace proved to be a boon. I liked the idea of enabling the sessions only after submission of assignments as this keeps the focus and interest level high!! Mentoring for each module and discussion with director after every three modules has been really enriching. Mentor always gave positive strokes but also gave emphasis on things that needs to be kept in mind while counseling like catharsis before goal setting, asking open ended questions, encourage counselee to speak, create a atmosphere of acceptance for the counselee. With good mentor system also I used to feel a need to know how actual counseling process happens. Assignments were more on how I would handle different cases and then feedback on the same. It would really help if few case studies are provided in detail, text format would also do. I understand that similar case might take a different turn in reality but a peek into actual counseling by experienced counselors will help novices like me. Overall it was a good learning experience and thanks to my mentor and director for guiding me in this journey. All the best to Banjara academy and hope to be a successful counselor one day.
